Half Term Entertainment: Modding Minecraft and Getting Started With Coding – Review

Two perfect books for bored youngsters this half term is Modding Minecraft by Sarah Guthals, Stephen Foster and Lindsey Handley and Getting Started With Coding by Camille McCue.

Both books are created by the same people who make the For Dummies Series, meaning that these books are simple, foolproof and hit their target readership well.

Modding Minecraft takes you through building your own Minecraft Mods with the LearnToMod online software. The layout and design of the pages makes instructions super simple to follow. No previous experience is necessary other than Minecraft game play and an interest in smashing blocks and Creepers with a diamond sword.

Getting Started With Coding is a bit more Hardcore Computer. It’s a fantastic book for those who don’t have a Coding Club near them. Again the book is fool proof in its design and instruction. It takes youngsters through coding with a trial version of MicroWorlds Ex. There are seven projects for users to get into, each in increasing complexity but never so much so that you want to hurl the book at the wall.

Both books are suited for 9 years and over to work through independently. Though younger coding fans could equally enjoy the projects in these books with a compliant and patient adult.

Both are priced £8.99 and available to buy as an e-book or hard copy from book stores and online
