Killer disease present in DIY

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) launched a new campaign this winter warning against the dangers of Asbestos.

The campaign called ‘Asbestos: The Hidden Killer’ is running through October and November. It reveals that the shocking number of trades-people dying from asbestos related diseases is currently 20 per week and this number is set to increase. The aim of the campaign is to reduce this number by warning people about the danger asbestos presents.

Steve Coldrick Director of the HSE’s Disease Reduction Programme said: “Exposure to asbestos is the biggest single cause of work-related deaths, with around 4,000 people a year dying from asbestos-related disease. The overall number of deaths is rising because a large number of workers who have already been exposed to asbestos dust around 40 years ago will go on to develop mesothelioma, a terminal cancer or other asbestos related diseases.”

Plumbers, joiners, electricians and other maintenance workers are those considered to be at high risk. Many people believe that because the substance was banned the problem no longer exists. Asbestos can be present in any building constructed or refurbished before the year 2000. These buildings will need repair and maintenance over time. Drilling or cutting that disturbs asbestos is then likely to be inhaled as a deadly dust.

Despite the campaign being aimed at trades people, many homeowners will go about their own home improvements and DIY without considering the risks they may be causing to themselves. Before carrying out any major home improvements it is work finding out more about asbestos and whether it is lurking in your home.
