Little Amal Comes to Bristol for World Refugee Week
- Little Amal in Bristol City Centre on 24 June 2022
Little Amal, the puppet of a Syrian refugee child, came to Bristol today as part of World Refugee Week. She spent Friday afternoon in the centre of Bristol, where she was joined by residents as she took a walk around the Old City and Harbour before departing on a ferry.
Amal is visiting ten towns and cities in England as part of World Refugee Week.
She was given a warm Bristol welcome as crowds of people descended on the centre of the city to meet and walk alongside the beautifully created puppet.
Little Amal is a large puppet of a young Syrian girl, who has been traveling the world to focus attention on the urgent needs of young refugees.
It takes three puppeteers to make the 3.5 meter Amal walk. She has been created by South African Handspring Puppet Company, which many might recognise as the work of the same people who created Joey in War Horse.
But it’s not all about the operation of the puppet, Amal was brought alive as she reached her hands out to children, danced, rolled her eyes, bounced her feet and reached for an ice cream.
The event in Bristol is one of the activities running as part of the City Centre and High Streets Recovery and Renewal programme funded by Bristol City Council and the West of England Combined Authority’s Love Our High Streets project.
