Making YouTube Videos by Nick Willoughby – Review
Our Verdict: An outstanding book taking children through the film making process
Our Rating: 10/10
This is a really good book for beginner film makers. Smart phones make early starts in film making possible for young children, helping them develop storytelling and technical skills.
Of course, many parents will have smiled grimly through shaky videos and long narratives about a favourite toy collection. We have many YouTubers to thank for that. I never knew home made videos of children cutting open surprise mini figure bags could be so entertaining.
But like it or not, YouTube and filming everything we do is here to stay.
This is where Nick Willoughby’s book comes in really handy. It can serve one of two purposes.
Firstly, it would be suitable for children aged about nine years and over who could use it as a manual themselves.
Or secondly you could work through it together as a family project.

The layout of the book is clear and concise with photographs, bullet points and trouble shooting. It’s made by the same people who make the For Dummies books.
This book will take you through the entire video making process, encompassing important and oft neglected skills such as pre-production, lighting, editing and sound recording. It’s simple yet informative instructions will help you make good quality YouTube videos from the Where Do I Start? point right through to the uploading and publishing process.
