Many Children Living in Inner Cities Have Never Experienced The Countryside
Children living in cities have no experience of the countryside, with a quarter of them never having seen a cow.
Even in cities such as Bristol which is surrounded by Somerset and mile after mile of beautiful fields, children are often living in areas of deprivation meaning there just isn’t the money to venture far out of the dangerously polluted central areas.
Researchers working for Bluestone National Park Resort in Wales, also found that 27 per cent of children had never seen a sheep, one in four had never been to a farm and one quarter had not seen a tractor in ‘real life’.
A total of 518 parents with children living in the city and with children aged six to eleven years of age took part in the research.
It found that of those ‘urban children’ who did manage to escape to the country for the day, they only managed to do so an average of six times a year.
Head of Sales and Marketing at Bluestone, Yvonne Buckingham said: “We believe childhood should be about fresh air, bright sunlight and scabby knees.
“Pebbles need skipping, holes need digging, water needs splashing – bugs, frogs and slimy stuff need capturing – and all before bedtime.
“So this is a real surprise that so many children are yet to actually even see a cow for the first time – let alone have a proper taste of the outdoors.”
Findings also showed three in ten children had never seen a bird of prey, one quarter had never seen a goat and 26 per cent had never seen a chicken.
