Most Deprived Areas Attract Fast Food Outlets

Poor Areas Have Most Junk Food Outlets:

The poorest communities in England show higher numbers of junk food outlets than wealthier areas, according to findings from Public Health England (PHE).

There are five times more fast food outlets such as chip shops, burger joints and pizza outlets in deprived areas compared to affluent ones. The new figures from PHE show that these junk food take-aways account for a 26 per cent of all eateries in England.

Chief Nutritionist at Public Health England, Dr Alison Tedstone said: “It’s not surprising some children find it difficult to resist the lure of fast food outlets when many neighbourhoods are saturated with them.

“Local authorities have the power to help shape our environment and support people in making healthier choices. They need to question whether these fast food hotspots are compatible with their work to help families and young children live healthier lives.”

More than a third of children in England are overweight or obese by the time they leave primary school, with the figure even higher in some areas of deprivation.

Local authorities are taking action, with the PHE urging them to work together to develop policies to restrict the further growth of junk food outlets.

Healthier Zones have been created by some local authorities, seeing limits placed on the number of take-aways allowed near schools and playgrounds. Others have worked with local businesses to try and provide healthier options offered using less salt, sugar and saturated fats.
