Mums in Business: The Baby Babette

Many mums give up breastfeeding within six weeks, despite knowing it is the healthiest option for their children. Arabella Sargent, a GP and mum from Sussex didn’t want to give up on feeding her child Freddie, this way. Despite being perfectly comfortable when breastfeeding in public, Arabella did feel awkward when doing so around her male friends and colleagues.

It was this feeling that led her to come up with her own solution, a lightweight, practical breastfeeding cover, which she named the Baby Babette.

Arabella is now manager of the Baby Babette business and sells her product all over the UK on the internet.

“At the time I didn’t think of it as any sort of great invention, it was simply something I worked out would help me in my day-to-day life so I went ahead and made one” she says.

“I made a couple more in different designs to go with various outfits and to give myself a choice. But then friends of mine and mums I was socialising with started asking me about them, where did I buy them etc. when I told them I had come up with the idea myself and made them from my own designs they couldn’t believe it! I started to get requests to make them for other people and it just grew and grew from there.”

The Baby Babette business is picking up through word of mouth, and Arabella has her little boy to thank for easing new mums breastfeeding experiences.

My son Freddie was the inspiration behind the creation of the Babettes but I’m happy to take the credit until he’s a bit older!”
