National Childbirth Trust Celebrates its 60th Birthday
It’s been 60 years since childbirth and parenting charity National Childbirth Trust (NCT), first welcomed pregnant mums to join up for support. Last year in 2015, the NCT helped over 100,000 new parents prepare for birth and parenthood.
Now the charity is looking ahead to the future to expand their reach and help even more new families prepare.
“NCT was created in 1956 with the aim that all new and expectant parents should feel supported, informed and confident and this remains at the heart of what we do today,” says NCT President Seána Talbot.
“We are extremely grateful to our volunteers and practitioners from all corners of the UK for their commitment and dedication over the years to supporting new mothers and fathers. We’re proud of our achievements but we’re also looking to the future, determined to expand our reach to support even more parents as we move forward.”
NCT started the first antenatal classes back in 1959. They also championed bringing partners into the delivery room and are currently at the forefront of pushing for confident breastfeeding in all public places.
Whilst best known locally for passive aggressive competitive parenting over chai latte and carrot cake, the NCT itself has also developed specialist support services for pregnant refugee and asylum seeking women.
Working with socially disadvantaged groups. NCT has developed specialist support services for pregnant refugee and asylum seeking women and also runs antenatal sessions for women in prison.
