New ‘fit for work’ system to replace sick note

The traditional doctor’s sick note, will soon be disappearing and replaced with a new fit for work system.

The ‘may be fit for work’ note will offer employers advice and options about how the patient can return to work if temporary changes such as reduced hours or changed duties are put into action.

Designed to save the British economy £240 million over the next ten years, the new note will come into operation from 6 April this year.

Lord McKenzie, Minister for the Department for Work and Pensions said: “The fit note will reduce the costs employers often have to bear when people are off sick for a long time. We know work is good for people’s health. With the right support in place, employers and doctors can work with employees to help them get back to work sooner.”
