New parents spash out average of £4000 on new babies

New parents will be paying out an average of £4000 by the time their child even reaches their first birthday.

According to a new report, the cost of providing a nursery, clothes, nappies and other essentials for first babies can be expensive, with the danger time mid pregnancy when 52 per cent of women ‘got a bit carried away’.

Yesterday Deneice Harwin from Philips AVENT, which carried out the research among 2,891 parents, said: “We know that new parents can often get caught-up in a ‘new baby shopping frenzy’, as a third agreed that they spent more than they needed, buying things they didn’t even use.  By doing a little research into what they will really need, and buying good quality items which will last, new parents can save an average of £136 when baby arrives.

By the time a second child has come along though, parents are more cash-conscious and make more informed purchases, based on what they learnt first time around.”

The research found that parents will be spending around £271.59 on the nursery alone, £661.20 on toys and £741.24 on clothes.

One in three parents agreed they spent too much money on toys and around one in four admitted to spending more than necessary on clothes.

Items parents believed were worth spending out on included a pushchair, cot and car seat.
