Parents don’t support children with GCSE languages
It seems the shadow of past failures from a parent’s school days reflects the way they support their own child through education.
According to The National Centre for Language, 34 per cent of parents with children aged from 4 to 18 are not encouraging their child with language options at GSCE.
Out of these, 23 per cent explained they felt unable to support their child with their homework.
The number of children taking a language at GCSE is now at just 44 per cent.
Teresa Tinsley from CILT said, “It’s understandable that many parents struggle with homework help, as it’s impossible to be an expert at everything. However, being able to speak a second language will open up a world of opportunities for young people, so today we’d like to see parents put away their anxieties and think about the benefits of their children taking a language at GCSE level – to ensure they don’t look back with regret.”
