REVIEW: Heinz Taste of Home baby food range

Chopsy Baby is reviewing…

Heinz  Taste of Home Herby tomato & cheese pasta – baby food for four months plus

Product Specs
The new Taste of Home range by Heinz, has been designed for busy mothers who struggle to make the odd meal from scratch.

The pots of food differ from the usual glass jars on the shelf, coming in packs of two small tubs with resealable lids. This allows unused food to be stored in the fridge for up to 48 hours as long as you have not contaminated it with a used spoon.

The Taste of Home range is available in three different stages and appropriate textures for 4+ months, 7+ months and 10 + months.

Heinz Nutritionist, Claire Baseley says: “Mum knows what’s best for her baby and trusts Heinz to provide nutritious meals for her little one. The Taste of Home range has been prepared with mums in mind to ensure that her children will be getting good tasting food at meal times. What’s more, the pots have been steam cooked and are good a source of iron which helps babies’ growth.”

Mother Evie Harris with her six-month-old baby son Rhys.

Evie says: “I started weaning Rhys when he was around five months as this was when he indicated to me he wanted more than milk. Initially I found him difficult. He didn’t like bland food, fresh food and was very fussy.

“As I carried on with different jars, some he would like, others he wouldn’t touch.

“He did eat the herby tomato & cheese pasta and the whole of the tub which I was actually really surprised about.

“At his next dinner when I tried the second tub, he only ate half because he was tired. I must admit, I popped the lid on and put it in the fridge and he carried on with it later. I know you are not supposed to do that but we did and everything was fine”

Best of all
Evie says: “The plastic tubs are useful because they seal slightly better than jars. Some glass jars don’t always screw back down properly allowing air back in. It is convenient because when babies are first weaning they don’t always eat lots. The first helping of one tub can be eaten straight away, whilst the second can be quickly heated by popping the tub into hot water.

“The flavour was nice. Not too bland and not too strong. The balance must have been right because Rhys is a fussy baby and he ate the lot.”

Could improve…
Evie says: “I suppose though plastic is widely recyclable, I would be more tempted to pop it in the bin whereas I can put the glass jars straight into the recycling box. But having said that, I am using the washed out plastic tub to store safety pins”

Basically…
Many mums will use The Heinz Taste of Home range for most dinner times, rather than the odd occasion that the clever marketing people suggest.

This is fine because though not adding anything majorly revolutionary to the market, the Taste of Home range is good enough for hungry babies and comes in useful convenient sized tubs.
