Review: My Favourite Nursery Rhymes DVD Classic hit

Soothing a crying baby with nursery rhymes has always been a popular way of introducing little ones to music.

The My Favourite Nursery Rhymes DVD released today, is a compilation of 21 songs busy parents struggle to remember from their childhood.

BabyTV’s child development experts have worked in partnership with Classic FM, to put together this set list of favourite children’s songs to simple animation.

Ideal for parents to share with their young children, the nursery rhymes include: Baa Baa Black Sheep, Mary Had a Little Lamb and Little Miss Muffet. And Songs include: Do You Know The Muffin Man? Five Little Ducks and The Wheels On The Bus.

The tunes are short and sweet running through at a snappy pace without becoming boring and can be used either as background music or can be enjoyed as an independent activity.

The animation is not typical of baby animations, featuring learning opportunities and discussion points as opposed to a daytime trip out in a nightmarish world of LSD meets Wimmer Ferguson.

You won’t feel too bad propping your baby up in front of these cheery tunes and simple animations whilst you are dashing off the dishes or having a speedy shower.

This is a DVD that will be fun to share with your baby on a wet, boring afternoon or for cash strapped parents as an alternative to weekly singing groups.

Considering the Classic FM partnership, our only quibble would be London Bridge is Falling Down. As it is the DVD opener, it would be nice for  the song to modulate to the dominant, giving it some lift.

Abi Lancaster and four-month-old daughter Celeste, tested out  My Favourite Nursery Rhymes for Chopsy Baby.

Abi says: “Celeste loved the DVD, especially the song – If You’re Happy and You Know It – which is the first time I ever heard her laugh lots.

“She was intrigued with the animation and smiled her heart out when I distracted her from the images and sang directly to her.

“I was a little sceptical of the DVD at first, not really believing in dumping babies behind DVDs, but I totally recommend this as an activity to do together. I think it will genuinely nurture an early love of music.”
