Review: Nanny Plum is comedy gold in new Little Kingdom DVD release

Released on DVD today, Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom – Holly’s Magic Wand and Other Stories, feature more episodes from the BAFTA award-winning series of Midas touch Astley Baker Davies.

Though aimed at pre-school children, Ben and Holly is quite clearly the older sibling to children’s favourite Peppa Pig.

The style of animation is recognisable, the vocal talent is in parts the same and the stories feature familiar characters and witty story lines.

The episodes can be enjoyed by little ones, primary aged children and even parents will find characters to laugh with.

The series follows the daily adventures of Princess Holly and best friend Ben Elf under the guidance of Nanny Plum, familiar to Peppa fans as Miss Rabbit.

Whilst Princess Holly is still learning magic, her spells don’t always work out according to plan.

But the best bits are the disastrous attempts at magic by Nanny Plum with her almost deadpan humour fantastically voiced by Sarah Kennedy.

Whether it is grumpy ladybirds, trying to repair the repair damage caused by Nanny Plum, or giant chickens sitting on elves, Ben and Holly is great DVD therapy for families.

This new DVD release contains ten episodes and a special bonus episode The King’s Busy Day.

The series was first broadcast on Nick Jr in 2009 and can now also be seen on Channel Five’s Milkshake.
