St Pauls Carnival Bristol 2023 – A Return to the City

St Pauls Carnival made a return to the streets this weekend, with a parade and street party, bringing thousands of people to BS2 in celebration.

The event started with its usual parade, headed by a tribute to the Windrush Generation and the Bristol Bus Boycott.

This year is 60 years since the Bristol Bus Boycott, as well as 75 years since HMT Empire Windrush arrived in the country.

A poignant tribute was paid to both Windrush and Roy Hackett MBE, who challenged head on the Bristol Omnibus Company’s racism in 1963 after they refused to interview a Black man for a job.

The carnival has been absent since 2019, making a return for the first time since the Covid 19 pandemic. Thousands made their way to BS2 for the parade, street parties and post-carnival celebrations.
