Sun Safe Advice for Families from Cancer Research UK and Nivea Sun

Sun Safe Skin Care Advice for Families:

Staying sun safe during the summer is really important for protecting children’s skin against overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. According to the latest skin cancer research, 9 in 10 melanoma skin cancer cases in the UK are caused by this overexposure. These can be reduced by simple preventative measures.

The findings has prompted Cancer Research and Nivea Sun to team up again this year with the aim of making sun safe advice easy to remember and simple to implement.

They have created the acronym CARE, which includes cover-up recommendations suitable for children who cannot wear sun cream for allergy reasons.

C – Cover up
Wear a t-shirt, hat and sunglasses

A Aim for the shade
Between the hours of 11am – 3pm in the UK

R – Rub on sunscreen
Use plenty with at least SPF 15 and 4 or more stars

E – Enjoy!
Have fun in the sun safely

More top tips from Cancer Research UK and NIVEA SUN:

Don’t get caught out at home: The sun can be strong in the UK as well as abroad, so it’s not just on holiday that you need to think about protecting your skin. And you don’t need to be sunbathing to get sunburn; plenty of people get burnt when out and about playing sport, shopping or gardening.

Protect your kids: Make sure your children’s shoulders are covered and they’re wearing a wide-brimmed hat when out in strong sun, and cover any exposed areas with sunscreen. It’s a good idea to spend time in the shade, particularly in the middle of the day when the sun is at its strongest. If you’re using a buggy, attaching a parasol is a useful way of keeping your children cool and protected.

Check your shadow: You can use the ‘shadow rule’ to work out whether the sun is strong. Simply look at your shadow and if it’s shorter than your height that means the sun’s UV rays are strong. This is also a good trick to teach your kids!

Bring a bottle: Keep a handy-sized bottle of sunscreen in your bag for parts of your body you can’t cover up with clothes. Make sure you use a generous amount and reapply regularly.

Cover up – even on cloudy days: UV rays can travel through clouds so watch out – you can still get sunburnt when it’s overcast. When the UV Index is 3 or more, the sun is strong enough to cause sunburn so take care. You can check the UV index at www.metoffice.gov.uk/uv to see how strong the sun’s rays are where you are.
