The Burdett Madonna back on show in Glastonbury

Prayers have been answered for a small statue which has been restored and  unveiled at Glastonbury Abbey.

The Burdett Madonna, depicting the Madonna and Child, was commissioned in 1928 by Glastonbury’s Roman Catholic priest, Father Francis Burdett and carved in limestone.

When its home – a small Catholic church – was demolished in 1939, the statue spend several decades forgotten about.

Now having been found a home in Glastonbury Abbey’s Museum, the local community and visitors will be able to see it again.

Director of Glastonbury Abbey, Katherine Gorbing said: “We have been delighted to work with the Clifton Diocese and St Mary’s Church to arrange the display of this beautiful sculpture at the heart of our museum, where thousands of visitors will be able to enjoy and appreciate it once again.”
