The ghost of Christmas past – Our baby’s bedroom has a gateway to hell shocker!
Since moving in to Chopsy Towers, some unwanted activity has been occurring in the bedrooms. Shadowy figures, balls of light, and an eerie feeling of being watched. We feel it is unlikely our house is built on top of an Indian burial ground, but there was also nothing in the landlord’s contract warning us of the gateway to hell in the baby’s bedroom, the focus of activity.
When weird things happen it is easy to put them down to atmospheric pressure, car headlamps or other naturally occurring phenomenon. We don’t want to believe that our home is being invaded by spirits, even when Thomas the Tank Engine begins puffing through the air.
Ok well the toys haven’t started to fly yet, but the feeling that you are not alone is an ominous and unsettling one. Just what is it that makes you peer over your shoulder and down the corridor ever two minutes? Instinct.
A real life recent visitor to Chopsy Towers made a rather hasty retreat one evening. We assumed it was our badly cooked chicken kievs, and poor taste in dinner table conversation. When we next conversed it seemed the person, who asked not to be named had encountered our spirit as well.
“As I was saying goodbye, the atmosphere of the house suddenly changed, I know we all felt it at once, even the children. Even though I didn’t say at the time I saw a figure of a man standing in the doorway. I checked at the time to make sure it was not my shadow or the light playing tricks but I couldn’t see how it could be. I left the house quickly. It felt all wrong.
“I wasn’t scared to come back as the house can feel normal. It doesn’t feel as nice as the other day but then it could be the weather.
“When you feel that someone is watching you, it’s like someone is in the room, or a memory. Sometimes you don’t care, but usually it’s not a nice feeling.”
The activity in our part of the building is nothing compared to what has been heard crashing around the empty section downstairs. As large as life at 3am comes what sounds like an inebriate coming through the main door, through the corridor, into the downstairs section, and knocking over every item of furniture there.
The only problem with this is that the section until this week has been empty, and there was no furniture in there.
“Well it will be the neighbours next door.” I was told by someone barely concealing their smirk. We asked them to stay over one night and tell us what they thought the ‘neighbours’ were doing in the wrong building. That very evening they stepped up to the challenge.
At around 3am I was awoke to someone charging into my bedroom and over to the window, “What’s wrong?” cried I? “Someone’s broken in!” came the reply. I rolled over and went back to sleep. I was never smirked at again.
We began to think about our spirit options. It was pointed out that only two doors down and apparently obvious to everyone from the décor, lived a spiritualist. Spiritualism is a religion of which a fundamental part is the belief and practice of contacting the dead. Well perhaps spiritualists could leave their front doors open so the dead don’t have to tramp through the neighbours houses.
Another person who asked not to be named told us their account of ghosts after the topic rose in conversation.
“I was led in bed reading after a hard days parenting when I noticed a bubble shape ball of light floating around the bedroom. After working and living in haunted places this was not really a great deal so I just turned over. Admittedly the lights all started flashing but I just assumed that it was our electrics.
“When I do see ghosts it’s so unexpected that I don’t get worried or scared but it’s when you are told somewhere is haunted and you don’t see anything, that’s when you do worry because you work yourself up.
“I put my visiting orbs down to the spiritualist church next door. It’s always much worse when they are having a meeting.”
There is so much construction and redeveloping going on perhaps it is disturbing the dead and awakening memories. Then there is the orb phenomenon. Scoffed at and spurned by many, orbs have been seen by more than two people in these premises so they are not purely insects, dust or rain.
We put our questions to Adrian J Darby of the Bristol Ghost Club who said:
“Some people believe that in the right conditions, people’s experiences and moments in time can be recorded into the building or area, and can sometimes be replayed like pressing play on a tape player during changes to those buildings or areas.
“ I have always noticed things in all the houses I have lived in. My most recent house when we first moved in, I experienced things like whispering in my ears and shadows, as well as feeling there was a little girl some nights downstairs just outside the kitchen door. Over time these experiences have lessened. Whether that is because I have got used to this house’s atmosphere or it has just calmed down. We still get the odd sting happen, its usually the feeling someone is there, but besides that its fine so I would say that wait it out and see what happens. If it does not go away then maybe you could get your house blessed in someway or bring in a known medium.”
Old Christian beliefs stated that if lavender were put into keyholes it would stop ghosts from entering. A believer in the afterlife gave similar advice to us, and after one creepy night too many we followed it.
We put cloth soaked lavender on top the radiators, which gave off a soothing aroma, and though it smells like a granny’s sock drawer, as long as the cloth doesn’t dry out we have experienced a huge reduction in activity.
