The Odeon On Union Street resurrects Again

Do you remember using the Mothercare slide?

The building has been the home to cinema audiences, a giant corkscrew slide, fast fashion and currently, the chilled section of Lidl.

The former Odeon cinema on Union Street closed its doors back in February, moving to a space in Cabot Circus Shopping Centre that had previously been occupied by Showcase Cinema de Lux.

The venue could be showing films once again, as well has hosting live music and joining Bristol’s nightlife offer.

It will be a new boost of life to the iconic building, which features a distinctive rotunda shape on the corner of Union Street and Nelson Street.

Plans online show a cocktail bar is planned for the first floor of the rotunda.

There is a live theatre room with a stage, a club space with DJ booth and a visual room on the second floor.

On the top floor is the green room for visiting artists, office space and staff areas.

Thomas Hodgson, Luke Turner and Jack Scales of UG Arts Ltd are behind the venture.

The license was approved at Licensing Sub-Committee this week, with public opening hours of midday until 4am Sunday to Thursdays and Midday until 5am on Friday and Saturdays.

The Odeon first opened in the summer of 1938, with stalls and a circle section and a giant seating capacity of 1,945 – this is roughly the same number of seats at the Bristol Hippodrome.

Bristolians still remember when the cinema was converted into three screens back in the 1970s. It was in 1983 that it was transformed into the building that the city is mostly familiar with.

The ground floor entrance and stalls area of the cinema was turned into a Mothercare, then H&M and now Lidl.
