A Third of Children Aged 18 and Under Never Read Books

Almost a third of children aged 18 and under never read books, according to research from Kids Insights.

The company compiled the views of more than 20,000 UK children aged between 4-8 years of age.

The research from this found that 31 per cent of children never read at all. Despite this, the number of children reading books has risen by three per cent over the last year. And, it’s paperbacks and hardbacks that lead popularity above eBooks and audiobooks.

Harry Potter topped the most read books by all ages last year, followed by Horrid Henry and the Gruffalo for 4-12 year olds and Game of Thrones for 13-18 year olds.

Reading choices were mainly influenced by parents for the 4-12 year olds. For children aged 13-18, their inspiration came from friends (34 per cent), the internet (33 per cent) and social media (31 per cent).

Just 14 per cent of children in all age groups have visited a bookshop during the last six months. Online store Amazon was more popular, though Primark and WH Smith were named as the two favourite high street stores.
