Tried and Tested: Colgate’s Sensitive Pro-Relief toothpaste

During pregnancy, women can find hormonal changes in the body start to affect their teeth. The normal build up of plaque on teeth can cause gums to become swollen and bleed. Women also report an increased amount of pain and sensitivity caused by temperature and sugary products during this time.

“This is my third pregnancy and each time my teeth have become really painful”, says 28 year-old Ruby Davidson, from Horfield, Bristol. “My wisdom teeth are still coming through and keep me awake at night. I even have to stop using electric toothbrush as my gums bleed so much.”

Ruby was delighted when Chopsy Baby asked her to test out a brand new toothpaste from Colgate-Palmolive.

It is not just pregnant women who can be prone to tooth sensitivity. Almost two thirds of people worldwide will have some sensitivity during their lives. Such pain is commonly triggered by cold air, hot drinks or sweet food.

Colgate’s Sensitive Pro-Relief toothpaste is the first of its kind to incorporate Pro-Argin technology. Arginine is an amino acid found in foods such as eggs, meats, milk, nuts and fruit and veg. It is also produced naturally within the body.

Used within the toothpaste, it plugs the channels which lead to the sensitive tooth nerves. Used regularly, it builds a protective barrier seal. Whilst most toothpaste for sensitive teeth simply numbs the pain, Colgate’s new product is designed to actively block the transmission of triggers such as heat and cold to the pain receptors within teeth.

Tester Ruby was less interested in the science and more with the results. “Actually, I am pretty impressed with it”, she says. “Almost immediately my wisdom teeth were so much better and the pain was less enough at night to let me sleep. As long as I kept up brushing with this toothpaste my gums stopped bleeding quite so much. For parents on a tight budget it is quite pricey but I found the results are worth it and it’s only for nine months.”
