Tunes 4 Toddlers Tantrums aids parents to stop tempers when they start

When it comes to taming a brewing toddler tantrum, musical mum Victoria Arlidge has created a fun CD full of catchy tunes as the ultimate distraction technique.

“Any parent with pre-school age children will tell you they spend a great deal of their time trying to avoid situations that will trigger tantrums,” Victoria says.

“Unfortunately, it isn’t always possible because the most common everyday tasks, such as brushing teeth, getting in the buggy and mealtimes, can be a real struggle for parent and child.”

With all her experiences as a mother to two young children, a composer of children’s TV programme music and running a local music group for pre-school children,  Victoria combined her greatest skills, writing and producing a CD of ten songs targeting the biggest tantrum flashpoints.

The final product, Tunes 4 Toddler Tantrums, comes with instructions on how to get the best out of the  CD and aims to diffuse a tantrum in its initial stages by jollying the children along with a fun song.

Tried and tested at Victoria’s music group Pitter Patter in St Albans. Hertfordshire, each song includes a specific action or game to potential incidents at mealtimes, brushing teeth,  bedtime and essentially, two songs for getting into the buggy.

Portishead mother, Sarah Huntington, tested out the Tunes 4 Toddler Tantrums on two and a half year old son Sam for Chopsy Baby.

Sarah says:”I have taken Sam to several pre-school music groups, largely without much success. He was never able to sit still and didn’t like me singing. I didn’t think for a minute we would have much luck with this CD, especially with the scale of tantrums simple things like putting on a coat can trigger.

“I have had some mixed results with the CD and think that with plenty of perseverance, it will ultimately be around 60 per cent successful at distracting him from a temper tantrum. We have to spend plenty of time learning the songs first for it to work, but I feel we are getting somewhere. He even lets me sing which is an achievement in itself.”

This CD is a another useful and unique weapon in the collection of parenting techniques for resolving tantrums before the volcanic erruption stage. It may not quite work every time, but will provide plenty of fun spending time learning the songs and actions and will be less stressful then trying to make wrigglers sit on the naughty step.
