Unexpected book in bagging area – self-service hits Bristol libraries

The convenience or irritation of self-service technology has been introduced to Bristol libraries.

Self-service machines, allowing readers to borrow and return books, will launch at Bristol Central Library on Monday 25 July and at Henleaze Library on Tuesday 26 July.

The scheme has cost a whopping £650,000, involving the tagging of more than 400, 000 books.

Councillor Simon Cook believes the new machines will be a big improvement on the type of machines already used in supermarkets.

He said: “This is a real step forward in how we deliver library services.

“Our investment in new technology will free up our excellent library staff to help readers and visitors with their enquiries and research requests.”

The machines will take less than 30 seconds to use and involve a four step process.

The scheme is due extend to a further 19 libraries  by September 2012.
