Volunteers Needed for Hoarding Help in Bristol
Bristol project needs volunteers to support council tenants with hoarding difficulties
A new Bristol project aiming to support people with hoarding tendencies needs more volunteers to help with its work.
Making Space is Bristol’s only service to support people struggling with compulsive hoarding.
Hoarding can really impact the quality of people’s lives as well as increase fire safety risks in their home or building. Often, it’s something which affects people when something goes wrong in their lives. It can come in association with other mental health conditions, be exacerbated by mobility difficulties or the onset of impairments such as dementia.
We Care Home Improvements has received funding from Bristol City Council and the Dolphin Society to support people in Bristol over the last seven years. They have now been given new funding to expand services to council tenants struggling with high levels of clutter.
Making Space caseworker, Naomi Morgan says: “Since we started this project the need for our service has rapidly grown and the pandemic has had a huge effect on the number of referrals we are receiving.
“We are looking for volunteers who are passionate about helping people. We need caring and empathetic individuals who are up for a challenge to work alongside people in their homes.
“It’s a hugely rewarding role. Our volunteers are an integral part of transforming people’s lives. They help people make space not only in their homes but also in their minds, increasing their confidence and wellbeing.”
All volunteers will receive training on how to work with people on at one-to-one basis as well as travelling around Bristol to recycling and donation centres. They will need to be able to donate two hours a week of their time.
