We make poor financial investment in gym equipment that languishes in dust at home

If you have a clothes horse exercise bike or a power plate which has become home to spiders, you are not alone.

According to a survey of 1000 UK adults, we are spending an average of £52 each on sports clothing and home gym equipment but not actually using it. Well, one in ten admitted they never use it.

The inspired to run brigade are not fairing much better, spending an average of £37 per pair of trainers but running just 11 miles a year with them.

The findings come from beabetteryoucourses.co.uk, who say gym goers they spoke to claimed that keeping up with personal trainers, gym membership and nutritionists was too expensive.

But research also shows that in 2015, gym users spent an average £550 on membership but only went 13.5 times in the year.

Spokesperson for beabetteryoucourses.co.uk, Simon Bubb said: “British adults should consider the most effective way for them to get fit and healthy which fits in with their budget – whether that’s a combination of pay-as-you-go fitness classes and home workouts, or personal training sessions to keep them on track. It has to work for the individual, and they need to be able to maintain it so their investment isn’t in vain.”
