New courses starting up at Silai for Skills January 2012

Parents looking to start their new year acquiring a new skill or brushing up existing talents will  find range of fun and practical courses starting at Silai for Skills this January.

There are lots of 12 week or one-day courses to choose from, with discounted fees for claimants on certain benefits.

Art and Craft
Create wonderful artefacts through a series of workshops practices and discover your own limitless creativity.  The course will cover papermaking, felt making, spinning/kitting/crochet, book binding, stitching and sewing.

Basic Hairdressing
This course will give you a good understanding and practical skills such as styling and basic cuts.

General Sewing Skills
This course is suitable for beginners or those who would like to refresh their skills.  It will take you through fabrics, seams, darts and zips.  You will work on your own projects making bags, cushion covers, peg bags, etc.

Upholstery
An excellent introduction to renovating upholstered furniture,  using skilled techniques suited to both modern and traditional seats.

DIY
Do you want to gain confidence with tools if yes this is the course for you!  You will learn how to do odd jobs around the house with more confidence…  Using the right tools for the right job and just having space to practise.  Change a fuse, plugs, put pictures and shelves up.  Minor repairs around the home.  Also come along with ideas of tasks that you would like help with.

1.  Decorative Paint effects. 
Give your furniture a new lease of life.  Learn stencilling and other techniques.  Bring your furniture to be re-vamped
2.   Knicker Making
Fed up with boring knickers come and make your own!
You may like to bring in your own fabric and/or the tutor will be able to sell material at cost

3.   Make a Lampshade
Once you know how making your own lampshade is easy.
You may like to bring in your own fabric and/or the tutor will be able to sell material at cost
