Women in the South West Face Barriers to Construction Trades
Construction trades in the South West are still dominated by men, according to a new survey.
The findings from Able Skills, shows that 92 per cent of us in the West Country have not encountered female builders, plumbers or electricians. Gender bias is still strong in the construction industry, but those roots go back into education, with 80 per cent of women in the region saying no one ever discussed options in construction trades with them.
One of the biggest worries this caused women was about limited career progression, but 36 per cent also spoke about facing prejudice simply due to gender.
A 19 per cent of those taking part in the study said they had come across a female working in construction, with 92 per cent saying their would recommend their work.
