Government Crackdown on Ticket Touts Using Robots
Ticket Tout Crackdown: Trying to get tickets to see popular shows and music acts can be frustrating due to touts scooping up huge numbers of tickets and reselling at sky high prices.
Shows such as Hamilton in the West End, have seen tickets for the hit musical posted on ticket resell sites for up to £6000, despite putting extreme box office measures in place to stop this occurring.
The show has put an outright ban on any reselling at all, refusing to issue any tickets in advance, opting for paperless tickets instead. When arriving, patrons must show government issued ID and the card holder who purchased the tickets must attend the performance.
Today, the government has announced a new law to stop touts using automated software to buy tickets in bulk with the intention to sell them on.
Those breaking the new law will face an unlimited fine for doing so.
Minister for digital and the creative industries, Margot James said: “I’m determined to make sure everyone has the chance to see their favourite stars at a fair price.
“This week we will reach the final stage in our fight to beat rip-off ticket touts using bots to buy huge numbers of tickets only to sell them on at massively over-inflated prices.
“Our work, together with improvements by industry, will give consumers greater protection, make the market more transparent and help Britain’s live events scene continue to thrive.”
