Active day out at Avon Valley Country Park

Chopsy Baby took three adults and three children to Avon Valley Country Park, in Keynsham, Bristol. The beautiful park is spread over 50 acres of countryside meaning that you never feel crowded. For a mainly outdoor attraction, we went in rain, which was a real test. We took three children aged two, three and seven.

There are plenty of interesting animals, some housed along a one-and-a-half mile walk, complete with assault course along the way. There is also a pets corner packed with rabbits and guinea pigs which the children loved. It was really nice to be able to get close to some of the animals though toddlers need careful control around the goats.

The outdoor adventure play area is designed for older children, but this did not stop a fearless two year old from trying out the areal slides and high walk ways.

The indoor play barn with slides and soft play was also incredibly popular with all three children. At first it seemed that the slides would not be suitable for the toddlers, but there was no keeping them off. Strict parental supervision is needed here to make sure they can’t get onto the bigger death slides.

All adults loved the free boat lake and the fantastic miniature railway that is an extra £1.20.

The park is situated near the Avon Valley Railway, and it was a fantastic sight to see the beautiful steam train running along the track in the distance.

Debbie (23) with Megan (3) said: “It was great that one minute you are walking along past animals and the next you are getting onto boats on a boating lake. We didn’t even have to queue. I think the place is brilliant. I have had a really great time.”

Jen (30) with Sid (2) said: “There was a hideously embarrassing moment when train mad Sid climbed over the barrier and rushed across the mini railway track. He sat himself on one of the carriages before anyone could stop him. At £1.20 for a long ride it was well worth the extra money but a complete nightmare trying to get him off again.”

James (33) with Sarah (7) said:“I liked being able to take the children into fields and get up close to some of the animals. It didn’t matter that it was raining at all. I thought there was plenty of things to do and was well worth the entrance fee. Yes there are a few extras to pay for, but they weren’t that expensive and it doesn’t matter if you don’t do them.”

Chopsy Baby verdict:

Avon Valley Country Park is a brilliant place to visit. We spent five rain soaked hours there and all had a really great time. If you have energetic children interested in everything then this is a great place to take them. As much of it involves physical activity, climbing and playing you do get out what you put in. Suitable for ages two plus.
