Bristol Arena Scrapped Surprises No One

It was the news that surprised no one but angered many yesterday, after Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees, scrapped the Bristol arena plan for a ‘mixed development’ instead.

Outrage spread across Bristol community Facebook pages after the decision was taken to look at options for an alternative scheme at the area of land next to Bristol Temple Meads which could include a conference centre, and a plush hotel and shops.

‘Residential homes for city centre living,’ have also been suggested, which in Bristol is a euphemism for expensive new builds which are unaffordable to most residents.

“We need to move forward now and ensure Bristol is fit for the demands of a modern, thriving and well connected city,” Marvin Rees said after rejecting the possibility of an accessible music venue which would have brought top acts to the city.

“I am confident an alternative development for Temple Island is at the heart of that vision and will create inclusive economic growth, jobs and homes. Jobs and affordable homes are the key priorities for delivery by my administration and they will come first.”

“By not borrowing the huge sums needed to build the arena, we will also release capital for other exciting city projects.

“I remain committed to delivering an arena for Bristol and we will continue to work closely with our partners to make sure that we make this a reality.”
