Bristol City Council Local Offer Blunders Again

The council’s SEND communication blunder follows a puzzle pieces row just last week

‘Have you heard of the Safe Places scheme?’ Bristol City Council posts on its Local Offer Facebook page today. No, because it doesn’t exist.

A Local Offer is a place where a local authority must publish its education, health and social care services for children and young people aged from birth to 25 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

But Bristol just keeps getting it wrong. There is currently no Safe Places scheme running in Bristol.

The council writes: ”If your child or young person is starting to travel independently or feels anxious when out and about, Safe Places could help.

‘The free scheme helps people with communication difficulties stay safe and get support when they need it.

‘Safe Places is just one of the services available to help children and young people with SEND travel more confidently around Bristol.’

The council then provides links ending up at the page for the scheme run by Avon and Somerset Police.

However, the police says: ‘The Safe Places Scheme is under review. We are not taking any new applications.’

Bristol City Council’s Local Offer page came under fire just last week for its use of puzzle pieces in its communication with SEND families.
