Bristol traffic light switch off starts by Easter

Bristol city council is gearing up to switch off its first traffic lights at locations in the centre of the city.

The council has chosen two sites which it considers to have low vehicle speeds minimising any potential danger to pedestrians.

The switch off trial will be monitored through CCTV to see whether everyone can cope without the signals being there.

The first location is the junction of Broad Quay with Prince Street on the city centre.

The second is the Union Street junction which meets Nelson Street opposite Broadmead.

The trial will start before Easter with plenty of signage to inform the public what will be happening.

Councillor Jon Rogers, Executive Member for Transport and Sustainability, said: “I am confident that pedestrians, cyclists and drivers in Bristol will show courtesy to each other and keep the junctions safe and flowing freely for all of us.”
