Private tenants to get protection against rogue landlords
Private tenants will soon be getting better protection and extra support when dealing with problem landlords.
Rogue landlords could now find their dodgy lettings and attitudes exposed on a new ‘tripadvisor’ style feedback website, which will allow tenants to post their experiences on both their accommodation and landlord.
A new National Landlords Register will also list how efficiently landlords deal with faults and repairs and log details about how up to standard their properties really are.
When conflict does arise between landlord and tenant, a new housing hotline will be in operation by the summer this year to help them out with free practical advice on dealing with their problems.
The new plans were announced today by Housing Minister John Healey, who said: “Over three million families live in private rented housing and while the majority of tenants say they’re happy with their homes and landlords many do face problems with their landlord and should have better help and protection on hand.
“Every tenant should be confident in their decision to rent as well as be clear what to expect before they sign on the dotted line.”
