Central Bristol Protest and Counter Protest Warning This Weekend

Central Bristol Protest: Unpleasantness, police and bigotry is expected in Central Bristol this weekend, as Gays Against Sharia UK, are returning to the city for a march.

The group will be meeting behind Temple Meads Station from 12pm with the march planned to start after 2pm.

Speeches by the Gays Against Sharia team will be taking place with guest speakers Ishmael Sali and Alex Nieora attending.

The group say they are returning to the city to ‘demand justice’ for Kevin ‘Bunny’ Crehan, a man who died in prison part way through a sentence for placing bacon on the door handles and shouting abuse at two elderly people at the Jamia Mosque in Totterdown in 2016.

Opposition group Lesbians and Gays Support the Migrants Bristol, will be counter protesting, aiming to show that Bristol is a diverse city that embraces everyone.

Of the event they say: ‘While they claim to speak for LGBT+ people, their Islamophobic message of division only seeks to sow the seeds of hatred.

‘The attempt to co-opt the identities of LGBT+ people to promote hatred of other marginalised groups is abhorrent and we stand in firm opposition. As members and allies of the Bristol LGBT+ community, we say not in our name’.

Last year, the march which attracted less than one hundred sparked a massive police operation in the city, which saw Queen Square on lock down with steel fencing.
