Grandparents increasingly taking on childcare roles

Grandparents are taking on daycare roles to look after the grandchildren when parents return to work.

According to a study by Workingmums.co.uk, 44 per cent of working parents utilized the grandparents as cheap or free childcare.

The cost of childcare was the reason cited for 40 per cent of mums not returning to the workplace.

A 23 per cent of those that pay for nursery places are pulling out up to £250 per month, with 24 per cent paying between £250 and £750 a month.

As well as high care costs the lack of working day flexibility in the workplace was another barrier to work.

Founder of Workingmums.co.uk, Gillian Nissim says: “This year’s survey shows just how important grandparents are in helping parents get back into the workplace. Working mums are able to contribute significantly to the British economy as a result of their parents looking after their children. Without their help, it would be impossible for many mums to go back to work – grandparents not only help with the childcare but also keep childcare costs to a minimum.”
