Parents spend more than £2000 kitting out newborns

It’s no wonder parents are returning to work quickly after having a baby as new research finds they are shelling out more than a grand kitting out the newborn’s nursery.

Despite recommendations that a baby shares the parents’ bedroom for the first six months of their life, a study commissioned by BabyChild.org.uk polled nearly 2000 parents on the cost aspects of their baby’s room.

The results showed that flush parents were shelling out an average of £216.72 on a wardrobe, £153.29 on a chest of drawers, £189 on a feeding chair and £43.82 on a moses basket – usually only useful for around six weeks.

The staggering amount was for ‘basic items’ and furniture without taking into account the price of toys or clothes.

When it came to the cost of toys, 68 per cent of parents pulled out more than £500 whilst 57 per cent of parents admitted to having more than £600 worth of baby clothes.
