Houlton Street Development in St Jude’s

Houlton Street development in St Judes Bristol – Frome Gateway Development

The Frome Gateway redevelopment of St Jude’s, is rolling ahead, with another proposal out for public consultation.

MRP Bristol Limited, a privately owned investment and development company and division of McAleer & Rushe, is proposing to redevelop the former Staples and Nisbets site on Houlton Street, behind Cabot Circus Carpark.

They are aiming to create a ‘vibrant’ mixed-use development that will include build to rent apartments, social and affordable housing and student accommodation.

MRP says the development will have ‘community’ at the ‘heart’ of the scheme with the creation of a new community hub.

MRP wrote in a leaflet sent to local residents: ‘The plans kickstart the first development of the Frome Gateway Framework, which aims to maximise the potential of brownfield and sustainable sites that are underutilised in this area.’

The land is currently being used as a carpark, with Central Warehouse using one of the vacant units as a cultural and roller disco location.

The current proposals state that 56 properties in the development would be social and affordable family housing units with bedroom numbers of 1 to 6.

There will also be 200 build-to-rent homes and 500 purpose built student accommodation bedrooms.

The community hub would include outdoor public space, landscaping and linking to the River Frome.

A student development by Dandra, opposite the Houlton Street development is also currently being consulted on. The block will be on Little George Street, which also has plans to open up the banks of the Frome – shown below. The banks are currently home to a variety of birds, including Egrets.

A public drop-in event will be taking place at Trojan on Newfoundland Circus on Tuesday 25 June from 3.30 – 8pm.

An online webinar will be taking place on Thursday 27 June from 6.30 – 8pm.
