Phone Scam Warning After Residents Targeted by Bogus Bobby

South West residents are being warned about an ongoing phone scam which has already conned an elderly resident out of a great deal of cash.

An 81 year old in Clevedon, was called on Monday 09 April, by a man claiming to be a London police officer investigating a bank fraud.

He was able to persuade her to withdraw cash in sterling and Euros which was collected by couriers who stopped at her home on two separate occasions.

Neighbourhood PC Peter Rooke said: “This incident has been very distressing for the lady involved, on top of the financial impact. I’d ask anyone who gets an unsolicited phone call in which they’re asked to transfer or withdraw funds to be extremely cautious. Genuine police officers will be quite happy for you to check with us by calling 101 or to call back when you can have a trusted friend or family member with you.”

Please be alert when answering the phone to anyone claiming to be from the police or your bank and asking for bank details or for you to withdraw or transfer cash.

Banks and police officers will NEVER ask for your PIN. They’ll always give you time to verify their identification and won’t hurry or alarm you. They’ll be happy to call back when you can have someone you trust with you.

If you’re suspicious of a caller who says they’re a police officer, ring off and call us on 101 to check. Similarly, check with your bank using the number on your statement or in the phone book.
