Review: The Elves and the Shoemakers at the Tobacco Factory’s Brewery Theatre

“Well shut my mouth” if this is not the best festive treat for little ones and their families this December.
Playing at the Tobacco Factory’s intimate but surprisingly comfortable Brewery theatre, The Elves and the Shoemakers makes for a lovely introduction to theatre for children.
This contemporary tale of woe – the opening of a big shoe superstore forcing a small, family run business to close – couldn’t be more apt for the current climate and perfect for the Southville crowd.
With a gentle flavour of Germany and some very basic German language, which will be more than obvious to little ones, the bright characters and set could have been lifted straight out of a story book.
The enthusiastic performances by Oliver Millingham and Philippa Howard as the Snookmeyers and Elves was engaging and captivated the young audience.
Backed by a fabulous Wallace and Gromit styled set, Danny La Rue’s shoe wardrobe and some lovely audience participation, the 45 minute show was perfectly pitched and timed.
If you are looking to entertain pre-school to post reception age children this Christmas, do not miss this show.
The Elves and the Shoemakers is everything good children’s theatre should be and at just £6 a ticket, you will feel like you are robbing them.
