Stunning Chambers Discovered Underneath the Clifton Suspension Bridge

Stunning chambers hidden underneath the Clifton Suspension Bridge are to go on show to the public for the first time.

The 12 cathedral-like chambers were discovered inside the two-story abutments which support the bridge towers either side of the Avon Gorge back in 2002 by accident having remained hidden for more than 150 years.

No construction documents survived and due to the vaults being sealed, until the builder’s discover it had been assumed they were either filled or solid stone.

Visitors will have to climb down a ladder and squeeze through a small passageway to reach them.

The bridge‘s visitor services manager, Laura Hilton said: “Brunel made sure it would last but he didn’t consider that people would have to go into the vaults to perform any kind of maintenance, so there was no entranceway to them at all.”
