The Revo and Rubik’s Cube

The Revo, from Drumond Park, has six funtastic multi-leveled adrenaline fuelled games all in one cube. With its flashing lights you can play during the day, or better still in the dark to increase your scores and settle the inevitable addiction it creates.

Chopsy Baby product tester Mathew, took the Rubik’s Cube and Revo on his holiday travels to liven up the dull “are we there yet?” journey for him and his family.

Mat says: “Being a fan of the original Rubik’s cube (also a hater when I couldn’t do it) I was really looking forward to testing out the new Revo.

“At first I never thought it couldn’t top the original cube but it did!  While sat in the car on a long journey I opened the box had a quick look at the instructions and turned it on!

“At that moment everyone apart from the driver turned to see what I was doing as I hadn’t read the bit about turning the sound down!

“Our favourite game is definitely the light speed game where you have to turn off the lights as quickly as possible. The game gets faster and faster as it goes along.

“I started with this game and was so hopeless I passed it to my 6 year old who beat my score easily.

“She eventually passed it to someone else and they too beat my original score.

“I then managed to get it back and have another pushing the coloured lights before the time ran out. This time I thought I did well after beating everyone else’s score.

“I even let my two-year-old have a try to stop a brewing paddy and even he beat my first score. He really enjoyed playing it. Although it is aimed at over fives, it was developing his hand eye coordination and he was learning the colours too. It’s a real family game and highly addictive. The whole family loved it.”

Erno Rubik invented the ‘Magic Cube’ in 1974 in his hometown of Budapest, Hungary. It first went on sale in 1977 in a Budapest toyshop and in 1980 the Ideal toy Cooperation began to export them as the renamed Rubik’s Cube. Since then it has become one of the biggest selling toys.

Mat says: “Being a fan already though not having played one in years, I was more than happy to get my hands on a brand new cube. I could mess this one up without annoying a mate and try to do it myself without picking the coloured stickers off and putting them back on.

“The best bit was the new ones come with a really helpful leaflet explaining how to put it right again which may mean I can find all my old ones in the attic and finally manage to complete them.

“The Revo cube is much more for the fast and furious hyper player whereas the Rubik’s Cube is more sedate and you have to think rather than react. I’m more of a Revo person but it was great to attempt to sort out a Rubik’s Cube for the first time in years, though heartbreaking to have to move it out of order to resolve it again!”
