When Dad Showed me the universe by Ulf Stark and Eva Eriksson

Our Verdict: It’s a strange but unique read best for five years upwards

Our Rating: 7/10

It’s a strange yet compelling story, best for children aged around five years upwards. The author and illustrator are both Swedish, which explains why in the story the father and child walk past a range of traditional, independent shops that no longer proliferate UK high streets.

A dentist father decides to take his young son out one evening to see the universe. It builds a lot of fact into the fiction such as star formations and why steam comes out of our mouths when it is cold. It is quite possibly the only story I have read so close to reality where the trip ends because the father has stood in dog poo.
